1612: The Pendle Witch Trials Begin: Eleven Accused in One of England’s Most Documented Witchcraft Cases

In August 1612, eleven people stood trial at Lancaster Castle accused of witchcraft in one of the most thoroughly documented witch trials in English history. Six of the accused came from two rival poverty-stricken families: the Demdikes, led by Elizabeth Southerns known as Old Demdike, and the Chattoxes, led by Anne Whittle known as Mother Chattox. The trials unfolded against a backdrop of religious unrest in Lancashire, a region long regarded as resistant to Protestant authority and sympathetic to Catholicism.

Ten of the eleven were found guilty and executed. The proceedings were recorded in an official publication, The Wonderfull Discoverie of Witches in the Countie of Lancaster, by court clerk Thomas Potts, ensuring the case survived as legend. In a country where fewer than 500 people were executed for witchcraft over three centuries, this single summer of trials in Pendle accounts for roughly 2% of that total.

1980: Baby Azaria Vanishes at Uluru, Sparking One of History’s Most Divisive Cases

On the night of 17 August 1980, nine-week-old Azaria Chamberlain disappeared from a tent at a campsite near Uluru in the Northern Territory. Her mother, Lindy Chamberlain, reported that a dingo had taken the baby, but her account was met with widespread public scepticism and intense media scrutiny.

The case became one of the most controversial miscarriages of justice in the history of Australia. Lindy Chamberlain was convicted of murder in 1982 and imprisoned, before new evidence, a piece of Azaria’s clothing found near a dingo lair, led to her release in 1986. A fourth inquest in 2012 finally returned the finding that a dingo did take and kill Azaria, vindicating the Chamberlain family after more than three decades.

1960: Francis Gary Powers Pleads Guilty at Moscow Spy Trial

On 17 August 1960, American pilot Francis Gary Powers stood trial in Moscow after his U-2 reconnaissance aircraft was shot down over Soviet airspace on 1 May 1960. Powers, flying a CIA surveillance mission, had been captured alive when his high-altitude spy plane was struck by a Soviet surface-to-air missile near Sverdlovsk.

Powers pleaded guilty to espionage charges before a Soviet military tribunal, in a trial that became a Cold War spectacle broadcast to the world. He was sentenced to ten years, serving nearly two before being exchanged for Soviet spy Rudolf Abel at the Glienicke Bridge in Berlin in February 1962.

1959: The Birth of the Man Who Would Become David Koresh

Vernon Howell was born on this day in 1959, destined to become one of the most notorious cult leaders in American history. The Branch Davidians, the sect he would eventually command, were themselves an offshoot of the Davidians, a reform movement within the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Howell later renamed himself David Koresh, drawing on biblical symbolism to cement his claim as a messianic figure. His leadership of the Branch Davidian compound near Waco, Texas would end in a 51-day federal siege in 1993, a catastrophic fire, and the deaths of 76 of his followers.
