1841: Facing the Noose Near Perth, He Believed He Would Return

A boy named John Burtenshaw was killed in 1839 while minding sheep on the banks of the Canning River near Maddington, within sight of a farm a few miles from Perth. The accused was identified as responsible during a tense period of conflict between settlers and Aboriginal communities on the colonial frontier.

He was tried and sentenced to death, then taken from Fremantle gaol in 1841 and hanged at the very spot where the killing had occurred. Accounts recorded that on the road to the gallows he showed no fear, finding comfort in a belief that after death he would come back to life.

1860: Freed From Servitude, Then Hanged: John Caldwell Executed at Perth for Assault

John Caldwell was a former British soldier, court martialled at Bangalore in India for stealing his own equipment and sentenced to seven years transportation. He arrived in Western Australia aboard the General Godwin, landing at Fremantle in 1854, and was granted a ticket of leave the following year. His sentence finally expired in July 1860, a free man again after years of convict servitude.

Within months he was convicted of assualt of a local person at Champion Bay. He was tried at the Supreme Court in Perth, sentenced to death, and hanged at the old Perth Gaol just nine days later on 13th Oct 1860, being buried at East Perth Cemetery.

1860: Thomas Airey Hanged at Perth Gaol Just Months After Winning His Freedom

Thomas Airey had spent most of his adult life behind bars in England before he was transported to Western Australia aboard the Nile, arriving at Fremantle in December 1857 to serve a 15 year sentence for burglary. In June 1860 he was granted a ticket of leave, a conditional release that let convicts who had shown good behaviour work and live within a set district without constant supervision, a step short of full freedom but a clear sign the colony had judged him trustworthy.

That trust lasted barely four months. By October 1860 Airey stood before the Supreme Court in Perth convicted of a serious assault and sentenced to death. He was hanged at Perth Gaol on 13 October 1860, aged 29, and buried the following day at East Perth Cemetery.

1867: Hanged at Perth Gaol, His Final Words a Shout for the Irish Republic

Bernard Wootton, a repeat escapee from Fremantle Prison, broke out in August 1867 in a scheme so audacious it fooled the guards: a fellow convict disguised as a warder simply marched the escape party out the gate. Tracked down weeks later near Beverley, Wootton seemed calm enough under guard that Sergeant John Moye freed one of his hands so he could eat breakfast. Wootton snatched a burning iron bar from the fireplace and struck the sergeant across the head.

Only the quick action of an Aboriginal police tracker, who wrenched the bar from him, stopped the attack turning fatal. Convicted of attempted murder at Perth, Wootton was hanged at Perth Gaol.

He refused all offers of religious ministration and went to the scaffold defiant, his last words reportedly a shout for the Irish republic.
