Chung Yeung and Lem Kai Hanged at Fannie Bay Gaol for the Yam Creek Murder

In July 1898, a Chinese man named Chee Hung vanished from Yam Creek in the Northern Territory. Days later, human bones were discovered in a neighbouring garden. Investigators found that Chee Hung had been accused of stealing gold, shot while fishing at a billabong, and then his body was cooked and dismembered with an axe to prevent identification. Lem Kai and his accomplice Chung Yeung were arrested and tried at the Circuit Court in March 1899, where circumstantial evidence was overwhelming and both men were convicted of wilful murder.

On 10 August 1899, both men were hanged in the yard of Fannie Bay Gaol in the presence of the deputy sheriff, gaol officials, and four justices of the peace. The executioner and his assistant were prisoners serving time in the gaol itself.

Both condemned men admitted their guilt to a Chinese missionary who attended them before the execution, and they met their deaths with composure.

The Acid Bath Murderer: John Haigh Hanged for Six Killings

John George Haigh was an English serial killer who battered or shot his victims, then dissolved their bodies in sulphuric acid to erase all evidence. He forged his victims' signatures to sell their possessions and collect large sums of money, a scheme he had refined through years of fraud and multiple prison terms. Though convicted of six murders, Haigh claimed to have killed nine.

Born in Stamford, Lincolnshire, and raised in Yorkshire by strict Plymouth Brethren parents, Haigh drifted from fraud into murder after becoming fascinated by French killer Georges-Alexandre Sarret, who had used acid to dispose of bodies. He was arrested in 1949 after police connected him to the disappearance of a widow whose remains, including gallstones and false teeth, survived the acid and were found at his workshop in Crawley, Sussex. Haigh was convicted at Lewes Assizes and hanged at Wandsworth Prison on 10 August 1949.

Jim Morrison on Trial in Miami for Indecent Exposure

Jim Morrison, lead singer of The Doors, stood trial in Miami, Florida on 10 August 1970, facing charges stemming from an incident at a concert on 1 March 1969. Prosecutors alleged he had exposed himself on stage at the Dinner Key Auditorium, using profane language before a crowd of thousands.

Morrison was acquitted of lewd and lascivious behaviour but convicted of indecent exposure and open profanity. He was sentenced to six months hard labour and fined $500, but remained free on bond while the conviction was under appeal. He never served the sentence. Morrison died in Paris on 3 July 1971, before the appeal could be heard.

A Parking Ticket Brings Down the Son of Sam

David Berkowitz, a 24-year-old postal clerk from Yonkers, was arrested and charged as the Son of Sam, the .44-caliber killer who had terrorised New York City across 13 victims and more than a year of terror. The break came not from the massive task force that had spent several million dollars and chased hundreds of suspects, including a priest, freelance journalists, and ex-cops, but from a $35 parking ticket issued by Officer Michael Cataneo on the morning of July 31, 1977, the same night Berkowitz claimed his final victim. The ticket was traced to his 1970 Ford Galaxie.

Neighbours in Yonkers had long suspected something was wrong. Sam Carr, who lived on the street behind Berkowitz, believed Berkowitz had shot his black dog Harvey and had complained to police just days before the arrest. Berkowitz later claimed Harvey the dog had issued him mysterious commands to kill. After more than a year of dead ends, the Son of Sam was undone by a piece of cardboard.

What Our Guests Say

A Great Night Out

Our guide was knowledgeable and fun. It was interesting to learn about Brisbane’s dark past. A great night out!

Amazing and Interesting Night!

Walking around won’t be the same after having this experience. It was an amazing
experience learning about all the dark crime that has gone on in my hometown.

Great local adventure

It was a fun experience with our lovely guide. You learn quite a few things about how criminals got dealt with in the past. In quite a few spots, I was surprised at the amount of the old buildings that are still there. A nice evening walk too.

Great Rocks Tour and Amazing Guide!

Our guide has to be one of the most enthusiastic and engaging guides I have ever met. This tour was a very nicely priced great way to get an overview of the rocks area, and I learnt new things and saw new places, which I wasn’t sure was possible.

Great Experience for Something a Bit Different

This tour was fantastic!! We toured around some really interesting unknown alleyways around the Rocks area and we were guided by an amazing, insightful and great storytelling guide. Would highly recommend this to anyone to enjoy a the combination of history and true crime thrills.

Great Experience

I thoroughly enjoyed this night. Tour guide was informative and totally enthusiastic in her story telling. Her passion for true crime history was clearly evident mixed in with some great humour that you just had to laugh at.

Unique Experience

Our tour guide was just fantastic. The tour was worth every cent and incredibly unique. We loved hearing all the true crime razor gang stories, learning about the key players of the underworld and seeing their stomping ground.

Fun Night Out

Our guide was full of energy and so engaging in her story telling of the Razor Gangs. So amazing to hear their stories and see where they lived and conducted business.

Razor Gang Tour

We wanted to try something a little different and that’s just what we got! Our tour guide was super bubbly and a natural story teller and we enjoyed walking around areas that we never even knew existed, learning about the Razor Gang stories of the 1920’s and 1930’s.

Will be Recommending the Crime Cruise to Everyone!

I loved the stories told by our hosts! They were delivered with enthusiasm and were super interesting. I did not know about any of the true crime stories. It was a gorgeous sunny day, perfect for being out on the harbour.

Relaxing and Educational

Excellent tour combined with being on the Sydney Harbour for the morning, made for a relaxing experience and we did indeed learn alot from Sydney’s sordid past.

Fantastic! Thank you.

We had a wonderful time. The Stories were great and told with great character, with very warm and caring service, felt valued.

Top Marks

We had a terrific night with the tour. Our guide was informative and clearly loved her role and the histories of the stories she was telling. And it had just the right amount of theatrics backed by fact.

Tour Guide was Awesome!

The tour was great! Really interesting stories, great locations, friendly, attentive and engaging
guide, and overall a great evening and experience. 😊

Thoroughly Researched and Presented Making the Stories Come Alive

I’ve been a crime reporter for various UK newspapers for many years and worked at the Old Bailey and High Court so I appreciate detailed knowledge. Our tour guide always had answers to questions extending the stories and that was great, as she was not simply regurgitating a script.

Historically Fascinating

A fascinating recount of Fortitude Valley’s shady past. The crime, the corruption,
the movers & shakers of the time make for a truly interesting experience.

We loved it and will definitely do more tours!

We loved the little details and how the dominoes all fall at the end. We been on tours before that discuss briefly crimes like the whiskey a-go-go but had no idea how deep it ran and how all these events were interconnected.

My Appetite has been Whet

Our guide was brilliantly educated on the content, and extremely engaging and entertaining. We had an amazing experience learning about OUR city and the dark past that I was thankfully oblivious to when growing up in the 70s and 80s.

Truly a fascinating tour!

I didn’t know this side of Newcastle’s history and it’s really interesting! Our guide was excellent
guide and very knowledgable, and her sense of humour was quite grand indeed! All around,
quite an awesome tour, with an awesome guide, and fascinating history.

Night Tour of the City!

Highly recommend a tour of the city in the night with Dark Stories. I saw Newcastle in a different way. Historical, factual and quite remarkable. Our guide was EXCEPTIONAL going above and beyond and so full of knowledge. I had a very enjoyable time. Thank you.

Terrific Tour

A friend and I had a wonderful tour with our guide. She was so warm, friendly and knowledgeable. The stories were so fascinating and left us wanting more. One story in particular was the stuff of a Stephen King novel! I can’t wait to revisit Newy to do the tour again! Highly recommended!

Awesome Crime Tour

Great tour! Our guide was delightful and witty. Wear comfy shoes, and don’t worry, you’ll
walk into dimly lighted corners of the town, but we weren’t murdered.

Great Night Out With Friends

The whole tour was fantastic; our guide was both entertaining and informative. Such a great
way to check out this beautiful town and learn some of Maitland’s dark history

Interesting and Entertaining

We did the Maitland True Crime Tour with a lovely guide. She gave us all the story
information with a delightfully entertaining, sometimes quirky twist.
