- 1793 - Louis XVI, last King of France, is executed for treason by the relatively new invention of the guillotine, the machine designed to administer death by severing the condemned person's head as painlessly as possible.
- 1813 - Peter Gory, John McCabe, and John Townsend hanged in Hobart, Van Diemen's Land, for committing a robbery at arms. Among the items stolen were 37 gowns, muslin, chintz, 16 petticoats, 20 balls of cotton, among many other articles worth a considerable amount.
